Oklahoma's Counties and the Towns With the Same Name

Several of Oklahoma's counties also share a name with a town within the state. This is nothing new, of course, and it's even sometimes expected for the town with the same name of the county to be the county seat, in the same way the seat of Beaver County's goverment is in the town of Beaver.

But this is far from a rule, as the town with the same name as a county may not necessarily be the biggest or most important or most accessible town within the county, and thus the town is passed up for the honor of being the county seat. Sometimes, however, the town is nowhere near the county with the same name. This table's purpose is to note where each town is in relation to the county bearing the same name, as a matter of pure curiosity and intellectual interest.

In the following table, "№" indicates the ODOT alphabetical county number. "County seat" is the county seat of the county bearing the name. "Town's county" is the county in which the town bearing that name lies. If a "—" is present in this column, it means no town shares that name. Entries in this column in bold red type indicate the town is not within the "expected" county. This list assumes that "City" can be dropped, like "Oklahoma, Oklahoma" is the same as "Oklahoma City, Oklahoma" in much the same way that "New York, New York" is equivalent to "New York City".

Notes

  1. Cherokee, OK is not only not located in Cherokee County, but is actually the county seat of Alfalfa County.
  2. While there may be no town named "Coal" in Oklahoma, there is a homonymous "Cole", which is in McClain County.
  3. Pottawatomie County has the similarly-named town of "Johnson".
